Product Overview
Tibetan Tea originates from Sichuan, China, and has been an essential part of life on the Tibetan Plateau for centuries.
Over 1,500 years ago during the Tang Dynasty, Princess Wencheng brought tea to Tibet as part of her marriage alliance, introducing tea culture to the region. On the high-altitude plateau, where fresh vegetables were scarce and diets were rich in meat and dairy, tea gradually became a daily necessity for Tibetan communities.
Traditionally, it was often boiled with yak butter, milk, and spices, creating a rich and nourishing drink suited to the cold plateau climate.
This tea is widely regarded as one of the earliest ancestors of post-fermented tea, laying the foundation for what we now know as dark tea traditions.
Over time, Tibetan tea became central to the legendary Tea Horse Road, where tea bricks were used as currency and exchanged for horses between Tibet and inland China.
For Tibetan people, tea is more than a drink — it is part of life itself.
“Better three days without food than one day without tea.”
